The Other Half Of The Nullarbor.

Wednesday 28th September

There is some confusion as to what time we left Border Village this morning. Not because we can't tell time but the clocks in the road house were confused!! The first clock had the correct time for SA but the local time and the Perth time were not quite correct. To make things worse our watches were on SA time and our mobile phones were on Perth time but we were in the middle and should have been on local time. Anyway we got up when the sun woke us and left not long after.

There had been a little bit of rain over night and that was the pattern for the rest of the day. A little bit of rain on and off. But not enough to spoil anything. There was a strong, very chilly wind as well.

When we left Border Village we put our destination in the GPS. It told us we had to go 699 kms before our first turn! The distance we travelled today was 740 km.
We also drove “The 90 Mile Straight” (146.6 km) and yes it was straight. Not a curve or bend in that 146.6 kms.

It is straight

Looking behind

We decided to leave the Eyre Highway and take a little side trip. There was a dirt track heading to the coast line and we thought it might be a good photo opportunity. Den was pleased as the track turned into a rough sand track and we actually needed to use 4 wheel drive. At the end of the track was a lovely beach complete with a wreck. A wreck of a car that obviously didn't make it! We will include a photo of the view.

The Kia didn't end up like this

It did get into 4 wheel drive

Back on the road we continued heading towards Norseman. There is not a lot to see and do on this part of the trip although the landscape is very interesting. There are quite a few roadhouses along the way but not much else. But we did see the Nullarbor Postie!

The Nullarbor Postie

This is what is inside

There are lot's of road signs warning of kangaroos, emus and camels but so far we haven't seen any. Well not living ones. Yesterdays road sign had wombats instead of emus.

New road sign.  One removed and one added

Across the Nullarbor there are a few RFDS Emergency Landing Strips (on the road of course) They are sign posted and marked on the road at the start and end. They are about 1 km long.

Tonight we are staying in Norseman and will head off to Esperance in the morning.

Deb and Den.
