Sunday 2nd October – Day 10
Well what a
day! As the tittle suggests it was a bit of a food trail today. We woke to grey
skies after hearing some heavy rain overnight but it looked like the rain would
hold off for a while so we did a load of washing. We got it on the clothes
line, walked across the road to our cabin and yes, you guessed it, it started
to rain. So back to the line we went. Half in the dryer and half hanging on
hangers around the cabin. Then the rain stopped and the sun came out. Typical!
While we
waited for the dryer to finish we went for a walk around the caravan park. The
park backs on to the Margaret River. When we were down at the water we were
watching some ducks and ducklings. When we got back to the cabin a very cheeky
duck wandered up on to our verandah. I took a couple of photos through the
glass door. The next thing you know the duck was tapping his beak on the door.
As I didn't have any bread to offer him I got the next best thing. Soy and
Linseed Bran cereal. The duck was so tame he was eating the bran out of my
hand.
Deb's Friend
Our friend should be regular because it ate Soy and Linseed bran and came back for more
Soon after we headed off to see the sights and find some of the food that the area is well known for. First stop was McHenry's Home Farm. Here they sell their own pork, lamb and speciality sausages. We bought some beef and bacon ones. Free range pork and grass fed beef. Into the car fridge they went and and we headed to the next place.
Down at
Yallingup there is a woodfired bakery. We bought a loaf of organic wheat bread.
They use stonemilled wheat flour, rain water, salt and yeast. That's it, no
preservatives or additives.
Then we went
to Simmo's Ice creamery. We started off having a coffee but couldn't resist looking
at the incredible variety of flavours. We gave in to temptation and tried some
sorbet. I had the blood orange sorbet and it was fantastic. The title of
today's blog was borrowed from the slogan out the front of the ice creamery.
This place lived up to it's motto
Then it was
up the road to a Chocolate Factory, Winery and Providore. What a fantastic
place. Outside there is a kitchen garden with lot's of vegies and herbs that
they use in their restaurant kitchen. The hedge that lines both sides of the
path are rosemary so the smell in the air is wonderful. Inside they have a
magnificent shop selling a large variety of flavoured and infused olive oils
and verjuice. They also have over 40 variety's of jam, chutney, preserves and
sauces. The have long tasting tables and it is great to try some of the more
unusual flavours.
Then we went
to the Chocolate Factory. It was like walking in to a wonder land of chocolate.
They had everything there. Chocolate nut clusters, enormous chocolate
freckles, chocolate flavoured massage
oil, chocolate flavoured lip gloss, ginger & apricots covered in chocolate
and so much more!! And yes they do have tastings. We decided to have lunch
there and no, it wasn't chocolate. It was actually a healthy lunch with cold
meat and salad followed by a coffee for me and tea for Den. Mind you we did
taste some chocolate on the way out.
After leaving
there we went to the slightly healthier place just up the road. It is a cereal
and nut shop. You can create your own muesli from a variety of ingredients they
have. By then it had started to rain a bit more but certainly not enough to
spoil our fun.
Until proven otherwise I am going to call this a Banksia
Next was the
Margaret River Cheese Company. They had a lot of very nice products for sale
but we refrained from buying anything as we still had enough cheese in the
fridge but we might pick up some when we leave the area in a couple of days
time.
On our way
back to our cabin we called in to a gourmet provision shop. They had some
interesting cheeses and cold meats but all we bought was a couple of bottles of
soft cider. This is non alcoholic cider. On the bottle it says the only
ingredient is Pink Lady apples. And it tastes just like a pink lady apple.
Beautiful.
There were kilometers of these lilies on both sides of the road. They were about 20 to 30 merter deep in some places
We then went
next door to the Candy Cow. It's a kids idea of heaven. Lots and lots of
lollies. We looked but didn't buy. We went there many years ago with Becca,
Liz, Suzanne, Mathew, David, Caron and Andy.
Then we
staggered to the car and headed back to the cabin. Dinner tonight was some
lovely fresh produce. The beef and bacon sausages, mushrooms and tomatoes and
the woodfired bread, all washed down with that lovely apple cider. What more
could anyone want.
The rain held
off for most of the day and when it did come down it was fairly light. It was a
good temperature, 23 degrees. Just nice.
We didn't
take as many photos today but have included some of the lovely flowers mostly
growing wild on the side of the road.
Tomorrow if
it is fine we are going down to Cape Leeuwin. It is where the Indian and the
Southern Oceans meet.
Deb and Den.
